Jean Hay Proud to be a Card-Carrying, Flag-Waving, Patriotic American Liberal

About Jean Hay
A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Hay and her Vietnam-veteran husband came to Maine in 1972 to go ''back to the land,'' farming land they purchased from Helen and Scott Nearing. Hay's first book, ''Proud to be a Card-Carrying, Flag-Waving, Patriotic American Liberal,'' is dedicated to Helen Nearing.
Hay became a reporter and bureau chief for the Bangor Daily News, leaving that position to become a commercial organic farmer. Always an environmental activist, Hay was an organizer in the fight to keep a multi-national energy company from building a coal-burning electrical generating plant within 35 miles of Acadia National Park.
In 1992 she served as press secretary for a Congressional candidate running as a member of the Green Party. In 1993 she went to work in the office of Maine's Democratic First District Congressman Tom Andrews of Portland. She ran for Congress in Maine's Second District in 1994 and for U.S. Senate in 1996, both time running as the progressive candidate in the Maine Democratic primaries.
Now divorced, with two grown children, Hay is a regular columnist for the Aroostook Democrat and has written for the Maine Progressive, Feminist Times, Yankee Magazine, the Rhode Islander, Maine Times, Penobscot Bay Press, and Farmstead Magazine. She is working on two other books, one about her homesteading days with the Nearings, the other a novel based on her experiences in politics.

All economics is local
No wood chip should leave Maine with its head on
